New Mexico (May 2011)

We love Mexican food and from all the photos I’ve seen of New Mexico (the landscape from the O’Keefe paintings, the vibrant chilies everywhere), we decided to head over for a long weekend trip (4 nights).

We flew from Vancouver to Albuquerque via Denver (quick flight) and got a car rental:

May 21 Sat – arrived in ABQ airport at 1PM.  We went straight to our first CHEAP EAT list at the “El Modelo” – we ordered the sampler and huevos rancheros with a large horchata which totalled about $15.  Little did we know we probably should of just shared a dish as they were both huge – I mean it weighed at least few pounds each… (we later saw a family of 6 come and order 2 dishes to share…yep probably a better idea)

After checking in, we explored ABQ old town, nob Hill, downtown.  Old town was the most interesting for us.  If we arrived early, we would of checked out the Saturday Market.

May 22 Sun – We drove to Santa Fe (about an hour drive) which definitely was a bigger town… we went to dt Santa Fe and spent most of the day walking around the shops.  I love blue corn so i was on a mission to find a restaurant that served blue corn tortillas… from the name Blue Coyote sounded promising and when asked the host said they served their tacos in blue tortillas… unfortunately, she didn’t know what she was talking about as it turned out they didn’t even have blue tortillas at the restaurant.. total disappointment.  We were too far away to hit one of our researched restaurants😦 oh well… live and learn.

There’s an outlet shopping nearby Santa Fe so we ventured out to check out a couple of stores such as Coach, Nike etc.  Fashion Outlets of Santa Fe

May 23 Mon – We headed to Taos Pueblo and had some authentic pueblo baked goods for breakfast at the pueblo… they were delicious and we bought some blue corn frying dough to make our own.  After the Pueblo, I finally found some of my blue corn tortilla at the Orlando’s New Mexican Cafe! It was fabulous. http://a1.urbns.pn/w/s/y6/HZ7Pooguu5QyGo-130.jpg

Then we headed to the Ojo Caliente spa where we had a massage, private bath and other mineral baths waiting for us.   It was the highlight of the trip.  The spa had various mineral pools outdoors with ranging temperatures to help digestion, arthritis, skin complexion, etc.  We had a little casita room with a mini kitchen. Highly recommend staying the night as bathing at night was much better! The spa restaurant is very well rated but the dinner was average… the breakfast however was fantastic and they even had my blue corn pancakes!

May 24 Tue – after spending the day in the pools relaxing, we drove back to ABQ with a stop over in Santa Fe for dinner at Maria’s New Mexican Kitchen.  This restaurant was the best food we had in New Mexico.. and they had 100 different types of margaritas.  This time we learnt from our frist day and ordered the sampler MARIA’S COMBINATION PLATE to share.. it was 3 plates of food so good thing we did for less than $20.

May 25 Wed – flew back home first thing at 6am.

Here’s a list of places we used which i can send you in word document to print out for your trip:
